Recurring revenue is the eighth wonder of the startup world. Without it, you're always chasing your next deal. With it, you get predictability, leverage, and clarity.

You can create predictable cash flow, higher customer lifetime value, stronger relationships, and sleep better at night. Even if you're in an industry that traditionally relies on one-off sales, there's often a clever way to bake in subscriptions or maintenance plans.

How to run it

Here's how two industries that ordinarily don't operate under a retainer model do it:

  • Eight Sleep sells mattresses, a big upfront purchase. But they added a $200/year subscription for ongoing sleep optimization (smart features, haptic alarm, insights, upgrades). The upfront cash covers customer acquisition costs, while the subscription builds lifetime value.
  • Web design agency? Charge an upfront cost for the site build, and then $99–$999/mo for hosting, ongoing edits, priority support, and small strategic upgrades. This gives you baseline revenue and keeps the relationship active.

Whether you're in SaaS, services, or productized consulting, recurring revenue gives you breathing room and boosts your valuation. Businesses built on recurring revenue have grown about 4.6x faster than the S&P 500 over recent years.
